I have recently met with Barbara Bower, Museum Director at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis in Newport News, Virginia.  Our conversation was about the 488th Port Battalion and why they were not listed as a recipient of the Meritorious Unit Citation (MUC).  Barbara said that the museum needed documentation to be included the 488th on this very prestigious list.

Don Iddings, a member of the 488th and D Company (the 191st), sent me the actual memorandum of the 488th receiving the MUC.  I showed this to Barbara and she said, “That’s it!”  When they redo the wall where the Units that received the MUC, the 488th Port Battalion will be included!

She also expressed interest in a “work uniform” or fatigues that the soldiers wore then.  She would like to put it on display at the museum.  If you have or know of anyone that has the “work uniform” or fatigues (especially if it has the MUC on it), please contact either myself or Barbara at the U.S. Army Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis.  She would love to have it on display at the museum!
